Masterplan's focus on developing modern collaborative project management skills lies at the core of our skills development offering. Change in organisations requires resources to produce that change (time, people, funding, and supporting methods and tools). Naturally, significant improvements and changes within a business are implemented with project initiatives. But the nature of projects today are shifting as a result of globalisation. Projects are no longer confined to functional area sponsorship, or even geographical boundaries. One of the most fundamental skills of a highly effective leader of projects, is the ability to influence without authority across the functions to work with, often borrowing individual contributors for projects. Facilitation skills lie at the heart of this ability to influence without authority. It is a crucial skills for project managers, to be applied throughout the project lifecycle.

Facilitation skills for today's project leaders
Facilitation is a discipline that enables bringing people together to accomplish a specific outcome in a determined period of time. It's application to projects, especially IT projects, is not new (in the mid-1970's Chuck Morris of IBM embraced collaborative design and implementation of distributed systems). Facilitation within the project lifecycle is a new application of a proven concept that supports project delivery by providing specialised skills and techniques that focus on people and their collective knowledge. Facilitation enables today's project leaders to engage the right people throughout the project effort to obtain the joint input of business and technology experts at the right time to build the right work deliverables.

"You can do a project without facilitation. But, you can also cut your own hair, do your own dentistry.. it just takes longer, is more painful, and you probably won't get the best results. Project managers can get results without facilitation, but they are taking a risk that it will take longer and will involve a learning curve they may not have time for"
