What is taught and the learning objectives?

Skillfully apply the foundational principles of facilitation using a highly structured framework, from preparing for a successful session, through to achieving buy-in and commitment to the workshop outcome, to session wrap-up and closure.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to…

  • Prepare, Set-up and Design Workshop Processes
    • Prepare a workshop for success by addressing all critical aspects and ingredients of workshop set-up and design an agenda that diagnoses and addresses a specific client need and outcome.
  • Deliver Powerful Workshop Introductions
    • Get a workshop started "right" from the start by creating an environment that educates attendees about the workshop purpose and objectvies, stimulates their interest in the workshop subject, empowers the participant's role and need for full participation, and involves them early in the workshop right from the start of a session.
  • Guide the Workshop Processes ("Staying on Track")
    • Keep the group on track by establishing and focusing on a clear workshop objective and course of activities that will assist in preventing unnecessary deviations from the agenda, which only serve to disrupt the workshop process and eat away at precious time. Maintain a high level of interaction and pariticipation in the group which responds to the "tired" periods during the workshop day.
  • Use General Facilitation Tools Whilst Creating a Participatory Environment
    • Demonstrate appropriate use (how and when) of a range of general facilitation tools such as flipcharting, brainstorming, grouping, prioritisation, nominal group and affinity analysis, whilst making the tool the participants voice.
  • Facilitate Dialogue and Discussions
    • Through the use of a range of questioning techniques and facilitated disucssion processes, to glean the correct level of workshop information that meets the objective.
  • Manage Group Dynamics and Conflict
    • Manage group dysfunction and conflict by using technqiues that both reaches group ownership of resolution, build consensus in decision-making throughout the workshop process, and arm the facilitator with the confidence to manage challenging situations.
  • Closeout Workshops
    • Close a workshop which reviews the success of outcomes attained as well as ensures clear action and ownership of outstanding issues, decisions to be addressed as well as leaves the group with an understanding of the next steps required to lead the group forward in their workings.

These principles are based upon the foundational competencies required to become an IAF Certified™ Professional Facilitator (CPF) with the IAF.
