Our strategy planning toolkit consists of a number of graphic chart templates that aim to guide a group systematically through a strategic planning process, which consists of three strategic questions:
- Where are we now? (Situation Assessment)
- Where do we want to be? (Setting Direction)
- What do we need to do to achieve it? (Implementation Planning)

Understanding The Situation Assessment
Developing a situation assessment consists of two graphic chart templates, the current situation assessment map and a SWOT analsyis map

SWOT Analysis Map (Full Wall Chart Size 118cm x 300cm)
Use this graphic chart template to take the information from the situation asssessment to build a summary picture of the key opportunities, threats and issues to be addressed in their strategy. This traditional strategy planning tool is well known and easily allows the planning team to get into meaningful discussion. The template moves the group to consider from the SWOT what the key drivers of the strategy are that will be vital in determining their future success.
Setting The Strategic Direction
Defining the strategic direction consists of several graphic chart templates for visioning, developing the goals, and setting measureable objectives.
Use this graphic chart template to visualise the future by brainstorming ideas about the "preferred picture" that describes how the future will look like if the organisation achieves it's aims. These ideas are then grouped into visionary themes (using the star bursts). The sunrise visual metaphor is used to capture agreement on a vision statement. The landscape is used to record core values and purpose that underpin the organisation's beliefs and traditions.

Similar to the Sunrise template, this graphic chart is used in a visioning exercise. The light bulbs are used to record the visionary themes, pointing inwards to the a central vision statement. Effective when facilitating large groups.
Use this graphic chart template to take the visionary themes and identify common and or critical themes among them, and develop the goals of the organisation, capturing these along the goal lines. The date line at the bottom helps the planning team to think about their planning horison went setting goals and objectives. The sunrise at the end is used to record the strategic intent statement. The large target visual metaphors are use to define the measurable objectives and targets associated with each goal area. Setting objectives is considered the toughest part of planning, and often planning teams tend to discuss their challenges during this exercise. The landscape (hills, mountains metaphor) at the bottom can be used to record these ideas.
Implementation Planning
Developing the implementation plan for the strategy by looking at the critical success factors, barriers and strategies.
Also available in two parts for much larger venues
Use this graphic chart template to develop the implementation plan of your strategy. The visual metaphor of a sports field reinforces that idea of devising the tactics to win the game (the strategy set in the previous template). The template allows the planning team to consider their success factors and barriers to implementation, before crafting the tactics to achieve the objectives. This powerful template culminates the strategy planning process in a structured and complete way.

General Process Tools
Although there are tons of process tools that facilitators use, it would be impossible to develop graphic charts for them all. We have created three that we use in most of our facilitated sessions, namely for brainstorming (including grouping), exit surveys (both for large conferences as well as for smaller work sessions) and setting objectives.

Use this graphic chart to allow participants to explore new ideas, without constraints on their thinking. The chart allows for a main focus question to be captured in the centre, as well as the grouping of central themes around the centre. A simple prioritisation process could be followed to highlight the main themes to be explored further.

Use this graphic chart at either the end of a conference or workshop or at a mid-point, whenever you want to take the "reading" of the group to surface their views. Participants are invited to write their comments in the stop, continue, change columns and then rate the meeting against three pre-determined questions.

Use this graphic chart template when setting objectives for teams and projects. The inner ring could infer primary objectives whilst the outer circle represents secondary or support objectives.

Advanced Facilitation Tools
These advanced process tools are used in conjunction with specific facilitation methodologies. An understanding of the association facilitation method would be required to maximise the use of the template.

This graphic chart template is great when facilitating using Appreciate Inquiry as the facilitation method. The template emphasises "what's the best of" and then clarifies what commitments must be taken to work towards a particular goal or situation.

This graphic chart template was designed in support of Dorothy Strachan's work Process Framework for Enabling Action. The template caters for the three questioning stages of What (observations), So What (reflections) and Now What (actions) which is used to guide questioning and stimulate discussed to move a group towards clear and specific outcomes, whether team development, policy development, even revision of a production schedule. We have successfully used this chart in support of a plenary session folllowing the World Cafe technique.
Optional A1 individual sized charts are also available for use with breakout sessions and other small group applications.
